12 High-Carb Foods That Are Actually Healthy

Carbohydrates aren’t the enemy — these 12 high-carb foods have the research to prove it


The low-carb movement has produced a useful correction to decades of fat-phobia — but it’s also created an overcorrection where carbohydrates as a category are treated as inherently problematic. They aren’t.

The distinction that actually matters isn’t carbohydrates vs. no carbohydrates. It’s between carbohydrates that come packaged with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients — and carbohydrates that have been stripped of everything useful, leaving concentrated sugar and starch.

These 12 foods are high in carbohydrates by any reasonable definition — and consistently associated with better health outcomes in research.


1. Oats

Carbohydrate content: approximately 27g per 100g cooked

Oats are arguably the most evidence-backed grain food available. The beta-glucan soluble fiber in oats has been studied more extensively than almost any other dietary fiber component:

  • Reduces LDL cholesterol by 5-10% in multiple meta-analyses
  • Blunts post-meal blood sugar response
  • Extends satiety significantly longer than equivalent refined carbohydrates
  • Feeds beneficial gut bacteria through fermentation

Carbohydrate content: approximately 23g per 100g

Bananas are the most commonly avoided fruit on low-carb diets — and the most commonly maligned carbohydrate source in fitness culture. The concern is somewhat exaggerated.

The Bottom Line

Carbohydrates aren’t the problem. Refined, processed, fiber-stripped carbohydrates are the problem.
