- Do foods that happen to be high in protein (red meat, processed meat) increase cardiovascular risk?
Protein itself: No direct cardiovascular harm from protein as a macronutrient. High-protein diets based on fish, poultry, legumes, dairy, and eggs do not increase cardiovascular risk — many studies find cardiovascular benefit.
Red and processed meat: This is where legitimate concern exists. Multiple large observational studies find:

Concern 4: Cancer Risk
The concern: High protein intake — particularly from animal sources — increases cancer risk.
The evidence:
The IGF-1 connection: Protein intake — particularly from animal sources — increases IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1), a growth hormone that supports cell growth. Elevated IGF-1 is associated with some cancer risks in observational studies.
The observational data: Some large observational studies find associations between animal protein intake and certain cancers — particularly colorectal cancer (strongest association with processed meat) and possibly breast and prostate cancer.
The important caveats:
- Observational associations don’t establish causation
