How this protein calculator works
Protein needs change with activity, energy intake, age, and health. This tool uses broad evidence-informed ranges rather than pretending that one exact number is right for everyone.
Start with body weight
Protein targets are commonly estimated in grams per kilogram of body weight per day. You can optionally provide a different reference weight.
Account for your goal
Daily protein requirements for general nutrition differ from the practical ranges often used for fat loss or resistance training.
Use a flexible range
The number shown is the midpoint of an illustrative range. Small daily fluctuations are completely normal.
Protein questions, answered
Is 0.8 g/kg enough?
For healthy adults, 0.8 g/kg/day is the longstanding U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). People who train regularly or are older may benefit from higher intakes. The RDA isn’t a muscle-building target.
Do people over 65 need less?
Not generally. Some expert groups suggest around 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day for healthy older adults, sometimes more when active. Kidney disease and other conditions can change that advice.
Can protein help during weight loss?
Adequate protein, alongside an appropriate energy intake and resistance training where possible, can help preserve lean tissue. Protein alone does not cause fat loss.
Do I need protein powder?
No. Supplements can be convenient, but ordinary foods can meet many people’s needs. Amounts vary, so check actual nutrition labels when planning.
