Soft drinks, packaged snack foods, reconstituted meat products (chicken nuggets, hot dogs), flavored yogurts with additives, most breakfast cereals, packaged bread with long ingredient lists, instant noodles, margarine, flavored chips, most fast food items, commercial cookies and pastries.


The Engineering Problem — Why Ultra-Processed Food Is Different

The most important thing to understand about ultra-processed food isn’t any single ingredient — it’s the deliberate engineering process that creates properties no natural food has.

The human body has sophisticated mechanisms for regulating food intake — hormones that signal hunger and fullness, stretch receptors in the stomach, glucose sensors in the blood. These systems evolved alongside whole foods over hundreds of thousands of years.
